Datamoshing – the beauty of glitch

Datamoshing, as it has been coined by the Providence, RI artist collective Paper Rad (warning, site may induce seizures), refers to a technique of exploiting video compression to create intentional artifacting and distortion. If you’ve ever skipped ahead in a poorly compressed DVD rip and seen the moving outlines of actors ghosted behind the pixels of the scene you were just watching then you know what I’m talking about. Evangelizing

So today begins as usual, with the typical re-routing of time away from the base building to evangelizing (and perhaps upselling) to a client. Out of respect to her, as well as any one I might mention on my blog, I will not mention her by name until she has a chance to say yes. In any case, she brought in (2) VHS tapes she wanted to convert to DVD. Now while she only imagined the possibility of her content as a disc, I see it much broader. For the last twelve years, I have constantly explored, learned and produced content destined for the web. Whether it is my job or not, I am always mentioning to clients the value of nearly free distribution online. Most people get it, though may not have the website yet to host it, the webmaster available to upload it, yada yada yada. There are many means to route your video online that are both free and easy. Welcome behind the scenes.  We hope to share with you our insights and enthusiasm for many things art, media + technology.  While we will depart from these themes on occasion, we will try not to stray too far from center.  And if we do depart from this trajectory, expect that there is good reason, and you might even be entertained, shocked even.  Or maybe you will simply unsubscribe.  Of course, we hope you’ll stick around :)
